1. Who we are
Lingua is operated by Clover Consultants ("we", "us", "our"). We act as the data controller for the personal data we collect about you through the Lingua app and website.
2. Personal data we collect
- Account data — name, email address, login credentials, language preferences.
- Profile and learning data — level, target track, lesson progress, XP, streaks, practice attempts.
- Voice and pronunciation data — audio recordings you submit for pronunciation scoring and AI chat, plus the derived scores and transcripts.
- Chat data — messages you exchange with the AI tutor.
- Support messages — anything you send us when contacting support.
- Usage and device data — log data, IP address, browser/device identifiers, crash and performance telemetry.
- Notification tokens — push notification tokens if you opt in.
3. How we use your data
- Create and manage your account (contract performance).
- Provide lessons, AI chat, pronunciation scoring, progress tracking, and notifications you opt into (contract performance).
- Improve the product, fix bugs, and analyse usage in aggregate (legitimate interests).
- Detect, prevent and respond to fraud, abuse and security incidents (legitimate interests / legal obligation).
- Send service announcements and, with your consent, marketing communications (consent).
- Comply with our legal obligations (legal obligation).
4. Who we share your data with
- Service providers — cloud hosting, database, authentication, analytics, AI model providers, push notification providers, and email delivery providers acting as our processors.
- Merchant of Record (Paddle) — our reseller Paddle.com handles payments, subscription management, tax compliance, invoicing and refunds. See Paddle's Privacy Notice.
- Professional advisers — legal, accounting, and similar advisers when needed.
- Authorities — where we are required by law or to protect rights, safety or property.
5. International transfers
Some of our service providers may process your data outside your country of residence, including in the United Kingdom, European Economic Area, and the United States. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses or adequacy decisions.
6. Data retention
We keep your personal data for as long as your account is active and for a reasonable period afterwards to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes and enforce our agreements. Audio recordings and chat data may be retained to provide and improve the service and are deleted or anonymised when no longer needed.
7. Your rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, port or object to the processing of your personal data, and to withdraw consent. Users in the UK and EEA also have the right to lodge a complaint with their local data protection authority. We aim to respond within one month. You can exercise these rights by contacting us through the support options in the app.
8. Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures including encryption in transit, access controls, and audit logging to protect your personal data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work continuously to safeguard your information.
9. Cookies
We use a small number of essential cookies and similar technologies needed to sign you in and remember your preferences. We may also use analytics cookies to understand how the app is used. Where required by law we ask for your consent and let you manage your preferences.
10. Children
Lingua is not directed to children below the age of digital consent in their country. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data without appropriate consent, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Changes to this notice
We may update this notice from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the app or by email.
